Most Highways Open in Central Mountains - Caution Urged
March 7, 2019, 7:16 p.m. -
The Colorado Department of Transportation has reopened eastbound and westbound Interstate 70 over Vail Pass and through Ten Mile Canyon. I-70 now is completely open between Denver and Vail.
Cleanup operations from the earlier snowslide continue on State Highway 91; it is expected to reopen later this evening. U.S. 6 over Loveland Pass will remain closed overnight due to adverse conditions.
HOWEVER, TRAVEL IS DISCOURAGED. IF YOU NEED TO TRAVEL, PLEASE USE EXTREME CAUTION DRIVING IN THE MOUNTAINS TONIGHT.
CDOT and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center will be monitoring the situation along the corridor throughout the night.
The avalanche risk remains and the potential for cloud avalanches remains. Should you encounter an avalanche or powder cloud while driving:
-
Reduce your speed
-
Pull over to shoulder, if possible
-
Turn off your vehicle
-
Remain in your vehicle
CDOT also will be reducing speeds through some areas as a safety precaution.
With another wave of adverse weather expected tomorrow, please anticipate avalanche mitigation in the morning and the potential for road closures. Make sure you are prepared with an emergency kit and adequate tire traction.
