Traffic shifts tomorrow on Edwards Spur Road
EAGLE COUNTY/EDWARDS — On Friday, Edwards Spur Road traffic will shift to the west side of the roadway between Miller Ranch Road and U.S. Highway 6 so road widening work can begin on the east side of the road. This traffic shift signifies the start of major construction on the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Eagle County’s Edwards Spur Road project, which will improve mobility along the half-mile stretch of road that connects Interstate 70 with US 6.
Along with widening the Edwards Spur Road to two lanes in each direction, this project involves building a two-lane roundabout at the US 6 intersection and pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements, including detached pedestrian bridges over the Eagle River and Union Pacific Railroad track.
Two-way travel on the Edwards Spur Road will be maintained while widening improvements are done in phases. Traffic will remain on the west side of the road for several months before shifting to the east to allow reconstruction work to take place on the west side of the roadway. Access to all businesses and properties will be maintained, but access points could change as work progresses.
The majority of roundabout construction will occur this summer with the goal of opening a functioning, albeit not completed, roundabout in eight weeks.
Most construction work will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday. There will, however, be occasional night and weekend work to meet this aggressive schedule. Most of the road work will be done by the end of the year, with minor finish work and landscaping taking place in 2020.
