Southwestern CDOT Winter Storm Travel Alert

February 22, 2019 - 8:04 a.m. - US Highway 550 Coal Bank and Molas Passes are CLOSED until further notice. 

The south closure point is located just north of Purgatory ski resort near Cascade, at MP 53. Access to the resort is possible from Durango. 

Th north closure point is located at Silverton, MP 70. The Silverton community has access to the north via Red Mountain Pass, which is not closed. 

This US 550 closure is for the safety of the traveling public due to adverse weather conditions and significant snow accumulations which have caused several snow bank slips onto the roadway. CDOT crews will conduct snow removal operations, including avalanche control work throughout the day.

CDOT PHOTO: Early Friday morning (2/22/2019) the CDOT Cascade maintenance patrol closed the gate on US 550 just north of Purgatory Resort. The highway is closed until further notice due to adverse weather and snow slide concerns.
