CDOT US 50C (Santa Fe Avenue/Drive) 4th St. to Baxter Rd. Overlay and Drainage Project Underway

PUEBLO, CO — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Tony J. Beltramo & Sons, Inc. kicked off the US 50C (Santa Fe Avenue/Drive) 4th Street to Baxter Road Overlay and Drainage project on Thursday, January 31, 2019. Work to improve drainage on US 50 C in the area of Aspen Road will be the first phase of the project.

Motorists will experience single lane closures on US 50C in each direction and a northbound closure at Aspen Rd. and US 50C, requiring a detour. Lane closures are expected to remain for three weeks. Signage is in place directing motorists through the detour route. A road closure at 20th Lane between US 50C to Carlton Pl., detour signage is also in place. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Work on this project will include milling and asphalt overlay, storm drainage improvements, and installing new ADA ramps and upgrading existing ADA ramps.

PROJECT PURPOSE & BENEFITS

The surface improvements on US 50C will correct rideability, fix existing potholes in the road surface, install new pavement markings, and will improve the lifespan of the roadway. Drainage improvements will enhance drainage performance on US 50C between Aspen Rd. and Carson St. and on 20th Ln. between US 50C and Carlton Pl. ADA improvements will upgrade accessibility for pedestrian traffic along US 50C.

PROJECT LOCATION

This project is located on US 50C (Santa Fe Ave./Dr.) between mile point (MP) 0.04 (4th St.) and MP 7.37 (Baxter Rd.). This project also includes storm drainage work on 20th Ln. from US 50C to Carlton Pl.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

The project is expected to last until August 2019. All work on this project is weather-dependent. The schedule below is broken down by each major component of project work. Work on each component may occur simultaneously. Business and residential access will be maintained throughout this project.

  • Working hours: Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m.

  • No work is expected over Memorial Day weekend (May 25-27), Fourth of July, or Labor Day weekend (August 30-September 2).

Storm Drainage Improvements Schedule:

  • Storm drainage work US 50C from Aspen Rd. to Carson St. and should be completed in March 2019. During this work, motorists should expect single lane closures in each direction on US 50C between Aspen Rd. to Carson St, with only right turns permitted. Southbound traffic on Aspen Rd. will be directed to turn right at US 50C and will not be permitted to cross through the intersection at US 50C. Northbound Aspen Rd. will be closed and there will be detours in place for the first three to four weeks. At Aspen Rd., there will be detours in place for the first three to four weeks. There will be signage in place announcing the detour route.

  • Storm drainage work on 20th Ln. will commence upon completion of the work from Aspen Rd. to Carson St. and the expected duration is two weeks. 20th Ln. shall be closed from US 50C to Carlton Pl. A detour will be in place. There will be signage in place announcing the detour route. Access to local businesses and residences shall remain open at all times.

ADA Ramp Improvements Schedule:

  • Work will begin on US 50C at 25th Ln. early February. This operation shall move west and then north on US 50C to 3rd St. in Pueblo. Each corner (to be improved as a part of this project) should take approximately two weeks. Multiple corners may be under construction at any given time. This operation will last through Spring 2019.

Overlay Schedule:

  • Overlay shall include planing (asphalt removal) and placing asphalt throughout the entire length of project zone. Beginning approximately mid-April, planing and placing asphalt operations shall commence simultaneously.

  • Overlay operations shall be from 4th St. to Baxter Rd. This work shall begin mid-April and is expected to end in August 2019. Due to scheduling conflicts, an exact location of each overlay operation start is unknown at this time. When a schedule is determined, a press release will be distributed with exact locations.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • Storm Drainage Improvements: Single lane closures on US 50C in each direction and a northbound closure at Aspen Rd. at US 50C, requiring a detour. There will be signage in place announcing the detour route. A road closure at 20th Ln. between US 50C to Carlton Pl., detour signage will be in place here as well. Access to businesses and residences will be maintained.

  • ADA Ramp Improvements: Single, one direction, lane closures on US 50C during this work between 25th Ln. and 3rd St. Side street access will be maintained for businesses and residences.

  • Overlay: Single lane closures in each direction on US 50C.

  • Traffic control personnel and flaggers will be onsite at all times during construction activities.

  • Detours, lane closures, and other traffic notices will be posted a week in advance on COTrip.org.
