Crews Open US 550 South of Silverton After 36-Hour Closure

Nov. 16, 2018 -

SOUTHWEST COLORADO—US Highway 550 south of Silverton is now open following a Wednesday evening semi-truck tanker crash that closed the highway for almost 37 hours.

Crews have been working to remove the semi from the side of the highway following the crash, which happened at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, on US 550 south of Silverton.

The recovery and removal effort required crews to transfer flammable materials from the crashed semi to another tanker, which arrived on-site Thursday after darkness and freezing temperatures further delayed the effort. Crews were able to complete the transfer and tow the semi this morning, Friday, Nov. 16, and re-open the highway.
