CDOT Begins Work on CO 142 from Romeo to San Luis
COSTILLA & CONEJOS COUNTIES - The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and United SW Group will start work on Monday, May 7, along Colorado Highway (CO) 142, from the Town of Romeo to the Town of San Luis. The project begins at the intersection of US Highway (US) 285 and CO 142 in Romeo and ends at the intersection of CO 159 and CO 142 in San Luis. Work will take place from mile point (MP) 0.00 to MP 33.52. The project will improve and prolong the life of the road surface.
The project will primarily consist of chip seal and top coat operations. Work will be done in both the westbound and eastbound lanes for about a 34-mile stretch of CO 142, with no closures exceeding two miles at any given time.
TRAVEL IMPACTS: Daytime work hours range from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Additional weekend work may be required if inclement weather interferes with the project. Vehicles may be reduced to a single-lane, alternating traffic intermittently in either direction, throughout the duration of the project. These lane closures, guided by flaggers and pilot cars, may have 5 to 20 minute delays possible. The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph through the work zone and there will be a 10-foot width restriction in place. Traffic fines in the construction zone will be doubled. The project is expected to last until mid-June.
Travelers are urged to:
-
Slow down ― Higher speeds can cause loose stones to scatter and damage vehicle paint and windshields.
-
Increase distance between vehicles ― Space between you and other vehicles will help reduce damage caused by loose stones.
-
Follow work zone signage ― Consider the safety of other motorists and the safety of the work crew when traveling through the project construction zone.
-
Use caution ― Bicyclists and motorcyclists should use extreme caution during construction operations.
