Final Work Underway on US 40 Improvements West Steamboat Springs

June 11, 2018 - No work during entire July 4 holiday week

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS—
Crews have returned to the project site to complete final work items on the US 40 resurfacing and safety-improvement project. These work items include:

  • Completion of barrier work at CR 42
  • Final inlaid striping and traffic markings
  • Sidewalk work, guardrail, fencing and landscaping

Travel Impacts

Currently, crews are installing fencing, with impacts to travel. Starting tomorrow crews will begin grinding the roadway to install the inlaid epoxy traffic markings; this will require traffic slowing and single-lane, alternating traffic from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and until noon on Friday. These operations will likely require a half-night closure of the intersection of US 40 and Elk River Road at some point.

Additional crews will be working on landscaping and sidewalks, which will cause only spot closures for equipment. Finally, during final highway striping, there will be mobile lane closures throughout the project. This last phase should wrap up by late July or early August.

WORK SUSPENSION FOR 4TH OF JULY HOLIDAY WEEK!
There will be no weekend work and a complete suspension of work from July 2 through 6.

The project has included the following:

  • Asphalt resurfacing (the top layer of asphalt was "milled" to address surface cracking and imperfections then overlaid with a new layer of asphalt) from east of Routt County Road 33A to Elk River Road (MP 126.0 to 130.6)

  • Shouldering and drainage improvements at CR 42 and adjacent to the KOA

  • Intersection reconstruction and signal work at US 40 and Elk River Road

  • Construction of approximately 1,800 feet of new sidewalk between Shield Drive and Riverside Plaza on the south side

  • Curb ramp improvements to add wheelchair accessibility at all four corners of Elk River Road/US 40 and along the new section of sidewalk (at three intersections and one access)

The $6.9 million project was a partnership with the City of Steamboat Springs. The City provided $877,900 in funding towards construction, including the water line work.
