US 36 Bridges at St. Vrain & Left Hand Creek
LYONS – The Colorado Department of Transportation and American Civil Constructors LLC (ACC) will set girders for the new bridge over Left Hand Creek on U.S. 36, approximately 6 miles south of Lyons, on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, prompting 20-minute traffic holds. Alternative routes are recommended.
Crews will begin preparing for girder erection around 3 a.m. by staging the cranes on either side of Left Hand Creek outside of the roadway, and closing the short dirt portion of Neva Road in order to create a staging area.
Trucks will begin delivering the 153-foot long girders around 9 a.m. on Tuesday. When the trucks arrive, there will be an approximate 20-minute closure of U.S. 36 at the work zone while the girder is placed. Traffic will then be released until the next girder arrives and is ready to be set. The 20 minute closures will occur eight times throughout the day. If this work continues into the 4:00 hour and causes notable traffic back-ups, crews will suspend work until after 6:00 p.m.
Alternative routes are recommended to avoid delays. Local traffic may avoid delays by taking Neva/Niwot Road to 63rd and then come back to U.S. 36 via Nelson Road.
Route alternatives between Boulder and Lyons include:
- SH 66 east to Hover Road, Hover Rd. south to SH 119 towards Boulder.
- South on U.S. 36 to Nelson Road. Nelson Road east to Airport Road, Airport Road south to SH119 to Boulder.
- Traveling from Boulder to Lyons, Jay Road east to SH 119. Then north on SH 119 to Hover Road, Hover north to SH 66 and west to Lyons.
TRAFFIC IMPACTS: During the work hours of 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday January 16, 2018 there will be eight 20-minute traffic holds on US 36 near Altona. A 25 MPH speed limit will be strictly enforced within the mile-long work zone.
The US 36 Bridges project is designed to perform stream and bridge repair at various sites through and along US 36 between Boulder and Lyons. The project involves channel enhancements, grade modifications, rock fall mitigation, pavement mill and overlay, drainage, bridge repairs and the replacement of a box culvert with a bridge. Each aspect of the work is designed to build more resiliency in the road and drainage facilities and return the watershed to a more natural and durable state.
