TRAFFIC ALERT : Avoid I-25 in Denver Tech Center area

May 31, 2017 - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 1 - Interstate shut down due to tanker fire, no estimated time of reopening

DENVER - Major tanker fire has shut down I-25 north and southbound between Orchard Road and Belleview Avenue, access ramps to this section of interstate are shutting down to keep traffic away from the mainline while fire fighting and clean-up operations continue. The I-25 on-ramp to Hampden Avenue is also closed. The interstate closure is causing traffic back-ups throughout the region.

The section of damaged roadway is cleared of vehicles.  There are epic back-ups on I-25 north and south of the the fire scene.

CDOT and emergency crews are working diligently to repair the pavement caused by the fire.  This must be done before the road can re-open due to safety of the traveling public.

It is too early at this time to estimate when I-25 will re-open.
What is CDOT doing now:
  • Assessing pavement damage as fire retardent chemicals are being cleaned up

  • Mobilizing crews, equipment and materials to make emergency pavement repairs

  • Detouring traffic away from the area to C-470 for northbound traffic and I-225 and US 85 for southbound traffic. Also detouring motorists to Lincoln or Dry Creek to east Parker Road.

Heat from the fire has caused damage mainly to the pavement and median barrier.
