TRAVEL ADVISORY:  Slow Down for the Cone Zone on US 160 North of La Veta

June 20, 2017 - Southeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 2/Huerfano County - The Colorado Department of Transportation and contractor partner, Tricon 2 LLC, are asking drivers to slow down on US 160 north of La Veta.

Beginning on Friday, June 23, the speed limit on US 160 will be reduced to 45 MPH through the work zone of the US 160 Widening project (between mile markers 291.8 and 298.1).   The project is expected to be complete in fall 2017.

This speed limit reduction is necessary to ensure the safety of motorists and construction workers.

During construction, motorists may be restricted to single-lane alternating traffic through the project zone. This operation will require crews to stop traffic for up to 15 minutes.

The project will bring several improvements for the driving public, including new asphalt paving, striping and the construction of a new passing lane on US 160.  The Interstate 25 on and off-ramps in Walsenburg will also be improved as part of the project.

CONSTRUCTION ZONE SAFETY TIPS

  • Expect the unexpected. Normal speed limits may be reduced, traffic lanes may be changed, and people may be working on or near the road.

  • Slow down. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes.

  • Don’t tailgate. Keep a safe distance between you and the car ahead of you.

  • Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and construction works and construction equipment

  • Pay attention to the signs. Warning signs help you and other drivers move safely through the work zone.

  • Obey road crew flaggers. They know what is best for moving traffic safely in the work zone.
