Grand Avenue Bridge steel girder erection schedule

February 14, 2017 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - I-70 traffic impacts, GAB closure, Sixth Street parking closure

GARFIELD COUNTY/GLENWOOD SPRINGS – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) announces upcoming nighttime traffic detours affecting Interstate 70, Sixth Street and the Grand Avenue Bridge. These detours are necessary to ensure the safety of interstate users during the crane operations required to place steel girders for the new traffic bridge over I-70.

“This is a large scope of work that will span more than two weeks,” said construction manager, Gaylen Stewart. “Our goal is to complete the work according to schedule, but if we experience wind speeds of more than 15 mph or bad weather, our schedule will be dynamic.”

Steel girder erection will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 15 with girders being placed in the Hot Springs Pool Parking Lot. Six girders will be placed between Wednesday and Friday, and no additional traffic impacts are needed during this time.

Westbound-only I-70 Night Detour to Sixth Street

Beginning Monday evening, Feb. 20 through the early morning of Thursday, Feb. 23 from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., all westbound I-70 traffic will be detoured via a break-in-barrier onto east Sixth Street. Westbound traffic will be detoured through Sixth Street to the Exit 116 interchange for access to I-70 westbound.

Traffic on eastbound I-70 will remain in its normal configuration during these night detours. The Grand Avenue Bridge will be closed all three nights of the westbound I-70 detour at 8 p.m.

FULL I-70 Night Detour to Sixth Street

The evening of Thursday, Feb 23 through the early morning of Friday, Feb. 24, and beginning Monday evening, Feb. 27 through the early morning of Wednesday, Mar. 1, from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., all I-70 traffic (eastbound and westbound) will be detoured onto east Sixth Street. Both eastbound and westbound traffic will merge into a one-lane configuration and will be detoured through Sixth Street in Glenwood Springs via a break-in-barrier on I-70 near Yampah Vapor Caves. The Grand Avenue Bridge will be closed during this time.

Eastbound I-70 traffic wishing to access Glenwood Springs and SH-82 to Aspen should exit early at the west Glenwood Exit 114.

Westbound I-70 traffic wishing to access Glenwood Springs will exit at the I-70 break-in-barrier prior to Exit 116 and will detoured via US Hwy 6.

Sixth Street Parking Closure

City street parking on Sixth Street from the Hotel Colorado to the Yampah Vapor Caves will be closed during the I-70 night detours for motorist and crew safety. Crews will close parking in the area the morning of Monday, Feb. 20 and reopen the morning of Friday, Feb. 24. Following the weekend, parking will close the morning of Monday, Feb. 27 and reopen the morning of Wednesday, Mar. 1.
