CDOT Hosts Western Slope Courtesy Tire Checks On Tuesday Technicians in Frisco, Glenwood Springs and Grand Junction Will Check If Tires Are Traction Law Compliant

February 28, 2017 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - SUMMIT/GARFIELD/SUMMIT COUNTIES — Don’t let warm temperatures fool you — winter weather and challenging road conditions still exist along the Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor, demanding motorists have their vehicles and tires operating at full capacity to ensure their safety.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Big O Tires are collaborating to educate drivers about winter tires and will provide courtesy tire checks at three western slope locations to inform drivers whether their tires are safe and meet Colorado’s Traction Law.

On Tuesday, representatives from Big O Tires will be checking tires from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. in parking lots at the following locations:

CDOT activates the Traction Law when road conditions require. When issued, the Traction Law calls for all vehicles to have snow tires, mud/snow tires or a four-wheel/all-wheel drive vehicle. All tires must have a minimum 1/8-inch tread. Failure to comply with the law can result in fines ranging from $130 to $650.

“As Coloradans know, winter driving conditions are not limited to winter — snow can fall and cause challenging driving well into spring,” said CDOT’s Statewide Communications Manager Bob Wilson.  “It’s never too late to invest in tires to ensure your car is safe to drive on icy and snow-packed roads. It’s better to prepare your vehicle late in the season than not at all.”

Big O Tires representatives will be on site to discuss tire safety and check vehicles to determine if they meet Colorado’s Traction Law standards. The representatives will provide motorists with a tire-check card that explains the Traction Law and notifies them if their tires meet the requirements.

“Big O Tires is committed to tire safety education for the well-being of everyone on I-70,” said Matt Greco, Big O Tires Franchise Owner. “Worn and bald tires are extremely dangerous during winter road conditions and we want to help people take the appropriate steps to ensure their tires are safe. Our Big O Tires locations offer complimentary tire checks for the convenience of Colorado drivers.”

To encourage drivers to invest in safe tires, CDOT is partnering with Big O Tires and other tire companies throughout the state to provide deals on new tires and winter vehicle maintenance.
