CDOT Begins Repairs in the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels

CLEAR CREEK AND SUMMIT COUNTIES—On Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2017, crews starting repairing and/or replacing barrier rail, handrail and the walkway within the eastbound portion of the I-70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnels.

This $2 million project consists will improve commuter safety and accessibility through the tunnel.

Traffic Impacts

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 22, crews will close one eastbound lane through the 1.7-mile tunnel, Sundays through Thursdays until late fall 2017. Depending on traffic volumes, full closures within the work zone may take place for up to 15 minutes at a time, with advanced notice to motorists.

In late fall, crews also will perform minor maintenance and cleaning of inlets in the westbound tunnel, also requiring a lane closure.

From Aug. 15-21, working hours will be 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; no lane closures will be in place.

From Aug. 22 through the project's completion, crews will work from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sundays through Thursdays. Single-lane closures will occur overnight.
