Vail Underpass frontage road travel restrictions begin next Monday

April 18, 2017 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - FRONTAGE ROADS RETURN TO ONE-WAY ONLY TRAFFIC THROUGH PROJECT SITE

EAGLE COUNTY/VAIL — Beginning Monday, April 24, the North and South Frontage Roads in Vail will be restricted to one-way travel for the short distance through the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Town of Vail’s I-70 Vail Underpass project site. The one-way travel restrictions will be in effect until the project is complete this fall.

These travel restrictions are identical to what drivers experienced last summer. All Frontage Road businesses, properties and residences will remain open and accessible during this phase of the project, but access points will vary in some instances.

The Frontage Road traffic flow will mirror that of I-70 with the North Frontage Road serving westbound drivers only from Lion's Ridge Loop to Timber Ridge and the South Frontage Road serving eastbound drivers only from Cascade Resort/Hotel Talisa to Cascade Crossing. Outside the project work zone, the Frontage Roads will accommodate two-way travel between the West Vail and Vail Town Center interchanges. Frontage Road drivers who are traveling in the opposite direction of these one-way sections will be able to turn around or use alternate routes along I-70 or the opposite Frontage Road to reach their destination.

“We’re asking motorists to drive with caution and pay attention to changing traffic patterns throughout the week,” said Matt Figgs, CDOT Project Engineer. “As we implement the one-way detours, there will be occasional lane shifts and more construction personnel on site.”

Due to the construction, the West Vail Green line will be suspended while the West Vail Red line will increase in frequency from the Vail Transit Center west on the North Frontage Road to the South Frontage Road. There are no impacts to other transit providers, including ECO, Bustang and Greyhound.

To accommodate increased summer travel, the South Frontage Road Vail Town Center roundabout will be restriped to allow two lanes of through travel from the south roundabout, through the north roundabout and onto westbound I-70. This is expected to be in place by mid-May.
