CDOT begins Narraguinnep Canal Bridge Replacement on Colorado Highway 184

October 4, 2016 - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - One week road closure expected

MONTEZUMA COUNTY- The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Structures, Inc. will begin construction on Colorado Highway (CO) 184 Monday, October 17 to replace the Narraguinnep Canal Bridge.  The project will be on CO 184, north of Cortez and between Lewis and Dolores, from mile point (MP) 1.2 - MP 1.4 (approximately 1 mile east of US Highway 491).  The project has an anticipated completion date at the end of November 2016.

CDOT and Structures, Inc. will remove the existing narrow and deteriorating timber structure and replace the structure with a concrete box culvert, install new guardrail, and add a new approach to the structure.

TRAVEL AND ACCESS IMPACTS: For most of the project, motorists can expect brief delays with one-lane alternating traffic during working hours with both lanes open at night.  For a one week period, October 24 -30, there will be a full road closure at the bridge with construction crews working around the clock, 24/7.  Local residents within the work zone will always have access to their property.

To take advantage of the road closure CDOT maintenance crews will also be replacing an additional culvert at a separate location, MP 0.3 (approximately 1/5 of a mile east of US 491).  The maintenance operation is expected to last three days.

During this one week closure, all traffic needing to cross the bridge should consider an alternate route south through Cortez.  Traffic heading east on CO 184 from US 491 can detour south to US Highway 160 in Cortez and head north on CO 145 towards Dolores. All through traffic heading west on CO 184 from CO 145 can detour south to US 160 in Cortez and head north on US 491 towards Lewis.

Once the one week full road closure is completed, brief delays with one-lane alternating traffic will resume.  Drivers are asked to obey all speed limit reductions (from 55 MPH to 45 MPH) and construction road signs during the project.  Area residents are advised that during working hours and during the full road closure heavy equipment will be used with possible noise.
