Lots of Bicycles on State & Local Roads this Weekend
DOUGLAS/ELBERT/EL PASO COUNTIES – One of the region’s largest annual cycling events is taking place on Sunday, June 5, and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is advising drivers to be prepared to “Share the Road” with approximately 6,000 bicyclists.
Beginning at 5:30 a.m. and continuing until early afternoon, bicyclists will be utilizing the state and local road system in southern Douglas County, western Elbert County and northern El Paso County. The following state highways are part of the route:
- State Highway 83 between Lake Gulch Road and El Paso County Road 105
- State Highway 86 from just west of Franktown to Elbert County Road 17/21
- Interstate 25 frontage roads, east and west of the highway, between Tomah Road Interchange and Castle Rock
CDOT is recommending all motorists and bicyclist use extra caution and Share the Road. Drivers are reminded to give cyclists at least three feet of space when passing – even if it requires crossing the center line, if it is safe – or risk a ticket.
Cyclists also must ride as far right as possible, and not impede traffic when passing other riders or riding two abreast.
The Colorado State Patrol and local law enforcement will be monitoring and assisting with traffic control.
