Independence Pass open for the season
Always check conditions before traveling mountain passes as spring snowstorms could close them temporarily or slow traffic.
Updated road conditions are available at www.cotrip.org or by calling 511 from anywhere in the state. Up-to-date information is also available via Twitter (@coloradodot), and be sure to like our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/coloradodot.
PITKIN/LAKE COUNTIES—Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews opened the gates to Independence Pass at noon on Thursday.
Approximately 45 cars were lined up at the gate with travelers eagerly anticipating the opening of one of Colorado's most scenic seasonal mountain passes.
Due to tight curves, steep inclines and narrow lanes on some sections of the pass, commercial and recreational vehicles 35 feet or longer are prohibited.
Inclement weather is still possible on mountain passes, so please use the resources listed in the infobox to view updates before you go. Should a late storm hit the area, snowplows operate on the highway from 5 a.m. - 7 p.m.
