CDOT Invites the Public to Look Inside Heavy Equipment

May 17, 2016 - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - Kids Can Paint the Plow

DURANGO, CO — The general public will have the opportunity explore heavy equipment and emergency vehicles this weekend.  The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will host Open Roads, an educational and fun event being held Saturday, May 21, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Durango Walmart parking lot, 1155 S. Camino Del Rio.

Have you ever wondered what the view is like from the inside of a snowplow or patrol vehicle? CDOT will allow the public to explore the inside of a snowplow, while the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will have a patrol car available for the public to see.

The Open Roads event will also provide an overview of how the CDOT and CSP agencies serve Colorado citizens.  In addition to showing off state equipment and vehicles, attendees will be able to:

  • Paint a snowplow blade; as a send-off for the plow’s summer storage.

  • Acquire information regarding summer road construction.

  • Obtain information about potential career opportunities at CDOT.

  • Pledge to drive distraction-free by adding your name the “Drop the Distraction” billboard.

  • Get child car seats checked for proper fit.

  • Experience the inside of a CSP vehicle.

John Palmer CDOT maintenance supervisor (Durango) said, “This is a terrific opportunity for kids and families to see and explore our plows and other emergency response vehicles. We encourage everyone to come out and visit with us.”
