Powers Project Begins
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project consists of adding a third lane in each direction of Powers, asphalt paving, and new lighting. Work also includes:
- Installing new traffic signals at the Airport Road and Aeroplaza Drive intersections
- Adding nearly 1,400 feet of sound walls on the west side of Powers, between Airport Road and Aeroplaza Drive.
- Realigning and reconstructing the Airport Road intersection
- Removing a portion of old Airport Road and minor widening of the Stewart Avenue intersection
Daytime work is taking place outside of traffic from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. However, drivers should anticipate overnight lane closures from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. For the duration of the project, shoulder closures should be expected on Powers, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, between Fountain and Platte and along portions of Airport Road.
“With the amount of vehicles now traveling through this area, widening Powers and reconstructing the Airport Road intersection will be key in helping to improve traffic flow,” said CDOT Project Engineer Mike Bass. “Reducing congestion will enhance traffic operations and safety around the Colorado Springs Airport.”
SEMA Construction, Inc., of Centennial, CO. is the contractor for the $4.8 million project. It is scheduled for completion in fall 2016.
