North frontage road impacts for Vail Underpass project on Monday
VAIL — On Monday, April 25, there will be alternating one-way traffic along Vail’s North Frontage Road and up to 15-minute traffic holds while crews set girders for the westbound I-70 bridge as part of the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and Town of Vail’s I-70 Vail Underpass project. Bridge girders will be staged next to the North Frontage Road and then lifted into place by two cranes. Alternating one-way traffic and periodic traffic holds will be implemented to protect the traveling public during this safety critical work.
This work is scheduled to occur from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m., although crews may work past 7 p.m. to complete the work in one day. During this time drivers should plan for delays as North Frontage Road traffic is stopped in both directions or directed through the one-lane section of roadway. I-70 will remain in its current alignment for this work.
“Major North and South Frontage Road construction will commence in July, but this one day of work on the North Frontage Road is necessary to install the bridge girders,” said Matt Figgs, CDOT Project Engineer. “We will use construction flaggers to hold traffic while the cranes lift the girders into place.”
NEW TRAFFIC CAMERA: CDOT and the Town of Vail have installed a camera to help commuters plan their drives and follow progress of the underpass construction. Visit codot.gov/projects/

The I-70 Vail Underpass project will add an additional underpass near I-70 mile point 175, connecting the North and South Frontage Roads between the Vail Town Center and West Vail interchanges. The project does not construct additional I-70 exits/interchanges into the Town of Vail. The project is scheduled for completion by December 2017.
