CR 308/I-70 Frontage Road Closed I/2 Mile East of Empire Junction Due to Rockfall
CLEAR CREEK COUNTY– The Colorado Department of Transportation has closed the north side of County Road 308, the Interstate 70 frontage road, about a half mile east of Empire Junction in Clear Creek County due to a large rock slide and unstable rock remaining above the roadway.
The slope above the road is saturated and unstable, making it unsafe for roped rock scaling crews to mitigate further potential rock fall risks. With warmer weather in the forecast for the coming days, CDOT anticipates rock mitigation to occur. When scaling does occur, short closures of I-70 could be necessary to ensure the safety of motorists from rock fall.
"We're in the midst of rockfall season and ask for motorists to stay alert to potential hazards in the roadway while driving," said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director. "Our maintenance crews and geohazard team stay very busy this time of year, working hard to clear roadways and ensure the slopes above are stable and safe."
Traffic Impacts
Alternate routes include using I-70 and Alvarado Road. Local residents can travel on the road to access their properties, but cannot traverse the slide area. Travel on I-70 and through Empire and Winter Park remains unaffected at this time.
