Westbound US 6 to close this weekend between I-25 and Sheridan for final shift
DENVER – Westbound US 6 will be closed this weekend between I-25 and Sheridan Boulevard so construction crews can do a variety of work activities needed to place westbound US 6 traffic in its final alignment by Monday, Oct. 19.
The westbound lanes of US 6 and the I-25 and Federal Boulevard on-ramps to westbound US 6 are all scheduled to close at 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 16, and reopen at 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 19. Throughout this weekend closure, crews will be putting about 2,000 linear feet of concrete barrier in place; doing waterproofing and paving work on the US 6 bridges over I-25, the South Platte River and Bryant Street; setting overhead sign structures to help guide drivers; removing sections of temporary asphalt pavement; and putting down permanent pavement in several locations along the westbound US 6 corridor.
“This is the last major traffic shift for this project, so while there could be minor traffic alignment adjustments in the future, when this work is done the majority of US 6 traffic will be in its final configuration through the project corridor,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director.
Perhaps the biggest improvement US 6 drivers will notice on Monday is the opening of a second westbound lane on the US 6 bridge over I-25 to accommodate drivers coming out of downtown.
Another change westbound US 6 drivers will see on Monday is the incorporation of barrier separated, collector-distributor lanes that will help separate the flow of traffic coming from I-25 with through traffic on westbound US 6 coming from downtown. These additional lanes will accommodate drivers making the transition from northbound or southbound I-25 to merge into westbound US 6 near the Knox Court Bridge.
TRAVEL IMPACTS:
- Westbound US 6: Regional through traffic should use I-70, Hampden Avenue or C-470 to reach the western suburbs.
- Northbound and Southbound I-25 to westbound US 6: I-25 drivers can exit at either Alameda or Colfax avenues.
- Federal Boulevard to westbound US 6: Federal Boulevard drivers should use either Alameda or Colfax avenues to travel west.
PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Kraemer North America, the primary contractor, is on schedule to complete the project in late October – 20 months after initial construction impacts and nearly one year ahead of CDOT’s originally estimated timeframe for the project.

During construction, commuters might want to consider alternative modes of transportation to help ease the impacts of the project. This could include using the Regional Transportation District’s West Rail Line or bus service or taking advantage of carpool/vanpool options. For information on RTD services, call 303-299-6000.
