Paving of WB I-70 between Georgetown and Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels to begin Monday
CLEAR CREEK COUNTY—Beginning Monday, Sept. 28, at 7 a.m. the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin asphalt removal and repaving operations on westbound I-70 from mile-markers 218 to 215, approaching the Eisenhower/Johnson Memorial Tunnels (EJMT). This roadway maintenance project will require single lane closures of westbound I-70, with one lane remaining open to traffic. Delays should be expected through mid-October 2015.
“While we know these single lane closures will cause delays, the roadway condition must be improved to maintain a safe driving experience,” said Paul Jesaitis, CDOT Region 1 Transportation Director. “It is a race against time to repave and repair the interstate before the winter weather sets in.”
The project will replace three miles of asphalt in the westbound lanes, three miles of guardrail improvements in the westbound lanes and 12 miles of guardrail replacements in the eastbound lanes from the EJMT to Georgetown. Crews plan to repave two miles of westbound I-70 a day and will impact one lane at a time. In total, approximately 20,000 linear feet of guardrail will be repaired or replaced.
Due to the nature of the milling and paving operations a moving one-mile lane closure will be in place. As weather permits, the guardrail replacements work are scheduled to begin in October and are likely to be completed in Spring of 2016. Normal working hours for the project will beMonday – Thursday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. to noon on Fridays.
APC Construction of Golden, Colorado is the contractor for the $6.5 million project. Please use caution and stay alert while traveling through the construction zone.
