Upcoming Upgrades for Highway 85
The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) project beginsMonday, August 10. It includes rotomilling and asphalt paving, bridge deck repairs, new curb ramps within Fountain to meet ADA standards, and a resetting of guardrails, bridge rails and traffic signals.
Two segments of Highway 85 are part of this project:
-
FOUNTAIN – About three miles between Interstate 25 and Lyckman Drive
Work hours – 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday
-
STRATMOOR – About three miles between Academy Boulevard and B Street – just north of the I-25 overpass
Work hours - 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., Sunday through Thursday
The speed limit may be reduced to 35 mph during work hours. Drivers should expect intermittent lane closures and delays up to 10 minutes.
“In addition to a new, smoother and safer road surface, the project will increase the lifespan of both the bridges where we’re repairing the decks,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Dan Hunt. “We’ll also be moving bridge rail on the Fountain Creek Bridge in downtown Fountain, which will be a key safety improvement. The new rail will protect pedestrians that are on the bridge since it’ll provide a barrier between foot and vehicle traffic.”
Schmidt Construction of Colorado Springs is the prime contractor for the $5 million project. It is scheduled for completion in November 2015.
