Travel restrictions this weekend in Federal/US 6 interchange

August 13, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Multiple work activities mean multiple closures, detours.

DENVER – The US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will reach another milestone this weekend when southbound Federal Boulevard traffic is moved into its final, permanent alignment over US 6. Shifting the southbound lanes of Federal to the outside (or west) onto the new Federal bridges requires closing all southbound lanes at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 14, and leaving them closed until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 17.

In addition to shifting Federal Boulevard traffic, crews will do various other work activities throughout the weekend including intersection paving work at the north and south ends of the Federal bridge, traffic signal work at the 5th Avenue intersection to put southbound traffic in its final alignment through this intersection and barrier and slope paving work along the westbound US 6 off-ramp to Federal.

With multiple crews working in different areas, both US 6 off-ramps to Federal Boulevard will be closed and northbound Federal will be reduced to one lane of travel throughout the weekend.

“While this weekend will be inconvenient for some people, we are minimizing the impact on the public by completing several activities at once,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “If we were to do each scope of work separately it would mean multiple weekend closures,” he added.

When Federal re-opens Monday morning, there will still only be two through lanes in each direction over US 6, but there will be full-length left turn lanes in each direction to improve storage capacity on the bridge. Federal will open to its full capacity in September after final work is complete on the bridge structure and in the center median area.

DETOUR ROUTES:

  • Southbound Federal through traffic: West on 8th Avenue to Knox Court, south on Knox Court to 1st Avenue and east on 1st Avenue back to Federal.
  • Southbound Federal to US 6: East on 8th Avenue to Zuni Street and use the 8th Ave./Zuni St. on-ramp to southbound I-25 to reach US 6.
  • Eastbound and westbound US 6 off-ramps to Federal: Exit US 6 at Sheridan Boulevard and go south on Sheridan to Alameda Avenue and east on Alameda to Federal.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Kraemer North America, the primary contractor, is on schedule to complete the project in October – 20 months after initial construction impacts and nearly one year ahead of CDOT’s originally estimated timeframe for the project.

During construction, commuters might want to consider alternative modes of transportation to help ease the impacts of the project. This could include using the Regional Transportation District’s West Rail Line or bus service or taking advantage of carpool/vanpool options. For information on RTD services, call 303-299-6000.
