The Countdown to Tolling on US 36 Begins

June 30, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Tolls start July 22; US 36 and I-25 Express Lanes carpoolers need pass for HOV.

DENVER – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the High Performance Transportation Enterprise (HPTE) today announced that toll collection on US 36 Express Lanes will begin Wednesday, July 22.

Currently, Phase 1 of the US 36 Express Lanes Project, from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street in Louisville/Superior is open, and while the tolling equipment is being tested, toll collection is being

waived for drivers to use the Express Lane. Drivers are encouraged to get an ExpressToll account and pass prior to the tolling start date. For carpoolers, the new switchable pass is the only device that will allow them to travel in the lanes for free, and for single drivers, the pass saves them money by not having to pay a license plate surcharge.

On July 22, both of the I-25 Express Lanes will become tolled HOV lanes. Carpoolers on the I-25 Express Lanes, who could previously choose the HOV lane to travel for free, must have the new switchable pass by July 22 to travel for free.

“We encourage all drivers to get a pass,” said HPTE Director Michael Cheroutes. “The pass gives you the ability to choose whichever mode works best for you on any given day. We want all drivers to have a pass and not be charged the more expensive license plate surcharge and toll.”

To get a pass, go to expresslanes.codot.gov or expresstoll.com.

The US 36 Express Lanes Project is a multi-modal project that is building an express lane in each direction on US 36, in addition to the two free general purpose lanes. The Express Lanes accommodate High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV), Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) and tolled vehicles. In addition, the project is replacing several bridges, building a commuter bikeway, adding BRT improvements, and installing Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for tolling, transit and traveler information, and incident management.  Phase 1, from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street in Louisville/Superior, is open. Phase 2, from 88th Street to Table Mesa Drive in Boulder, will open in 2016.
