Full Closures of Federal Boulevard for Bridge Demolition this Weekend
This $12 million project replaces the structurally deficient bridge, along with other safety and aesthetic improvements.
A northbound detour route will be available at 64th Avenue, west to Lowell Boulevard, north to 64th Avenue and then east returning to Federal Boulevard. The southbound detour route will be at 72nd Avenue, west to Lowell Boulevard, south to 64th Avenue and east to Federal Boulevard. Due to safety concerns, pedestrians are advised to take an alternate route and to expect significant delays when attempting to cross the construction site. RTD buses and pick up locations may be rerouted. For the most up to date information on bus route changes, view alerts on rtd-denver.com.
Background
The Federal Boulevard & 69th Bridge Replacement over BNSF & RTD project will replace the existing deficient and functionally obsolete bridge along Federal Boulevard and reconstruct one half mile of roadway from W 67th Avenue to W 70th Avenue. The new bridge is being widened to keep two lanes open in each direction during peak travel times through phased construction. Extensive earthwork and retaining walls are required at the bridge approaches.
Completion of this project will result in a wider bridge that will allow for future expansion of the roadway. ADA curb ramps will be added for handicap access and new wider sidewalks on each side of Federal Boulevard will improve pedestrian safety. Raised medians will be added to separate traffic and aesthetic enhancements will include a raised median planter with the Westminster city logo and future sculptures. Further benefits include added lighting for Little Dry Creek pedestrian trail and a new signal at 69th Ave to access the future RTD Eagle-P3 commuter rail station.
The City of Westminster has been an important partner in the planning and development of this project, which is scheduled for completion in Late 2016. CDOT and the contractor team, lead by Hamon Infrastructure, would like to remind motorists to Slow for the Cone Zone. Fines will be doubled within the work zone.
