CDOT set to open new northbound I-25 off-ramp bridge to US 6

June 11, 2015 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Work requires weekend closure of northbound I-25 ramps to US 6, June 12-15.

DENVER – Beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday, June 12, crews on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) US 6 Bridges Design Build Project will close the northbound I-25 off-ramp to the US 6 interchange to allow completion of a new bridge that spans the railroad tracks. The ramps will remain closed all weekend and will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, June 15.

“These efforts will allow us to enjoy the fruits of the I-25 Gap Lane Project from last August,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “Once this bridge opens Monday morning, drivers entering northbound I-25 from the Santa Fe Drive/Cedar Avenue on-ramp will no longer be forced to merge left, meaning the right lane will be continuous all the way to the US 6 interchange. This should improve the flow of traffic on northbound I-25 through the area.”

Last August, CDOT added a fourth through lane of traffic on northbound I-25 between Santa Fe Drive and the US 6 interchange as part of the Gap Lane Project. Since then, however, drivers have only experienced part of the benefits of that project while crews have worked to complete the new off-ramps to US 6.

When this northbound off-ramp bridge opens, drivers will experience the benefits of having four continuous, uninterrupted lanes of travel on northbound I-25. In addition, there will be a fifth auxiliary lane connecting the northbound Santa Fe Drive on-ramp to northbound I-25 with the off-ramps to US 6. Until this point, drivers entering northbound I-25 from Santa Fe Drive have been forced to merge left for a short distance before being able to exit at US 6.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

Northbound I-25 to westbound US 6 detour: Motorists should take 8th Avenue west to Federal Boulevard, then use the Federal Boulevard on-ramp to westbound US 6.

Northbound I-25 to eastbound US 6 detour: Motorists should exit at 8th Avenue and go east to Kalamath Street, then south on Kalamath to access eastbound 6th Avenue.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for October 2015.
