Full Overnight Closure of Westbound US 6 at Garrison for Bridge Demolition
DENVER – As part of the US 6 over Garrison Street bridge replacement project, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will close westbound US 6 on Tuesday, April 28 from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. to demolish the structurally obsolete bridge. Eastbound US 6 will remain open to traffic.
To detour around the westbound US 6 closure, motorists can take Wadsworth Boulevard south to Alameda Avenue, then head west to Kipling Street. The westbound exit onto Garrison Street will remain open, but traffic will be routed north to Colfax Avenue during the bridge demolition.
Background
The replacement of the existing structurally deficient bridge along US 6 over Garrison Street began in January 2015 and will be completed in five phases. Three of the phases are for bridge demolition and reconstruction. In each phase, a section of the existing bridge will be demolished while a section of the new bridge is constructed. Three lanes in each direction on US 6 will be maintained at peak travel times throughout the project, but a series of shifts in the lanes will accompany each phase. Intermittent night work will result in lane closures.
The construction project will provide greater vertical sight distance on US 6, improve drainage, widen lanes on both US6 and Garrison Street and improve sidewalks, signals, bike lanes, aesthetics and lighting under the bridge. The City of Lakewood has been an important partner in the planning and development of this project, which is scheduled for completion in late 2015.
CDOT and the contractor team, led by Hamon Infrastructure, would like to remind motorists to slow down in the construction area. Fines will be doubled within the work zone.
