Work to begin on SH 133 early next week

March 4, 2015 - Northwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 3 - GARFIELD/PITKIN COUNTIES–The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin a project to improve SH 133 between Redstone and Carbondale on Monday, March 9.

The first phase of the project will concentrate on three bridge structures in the following locations:

  • Bridge structure #1 at mile marker 51.6 (over Coal Creek)

  • Bridge structure #2 at mile marker 62.8 (over Thompson Creek)

  • Bridge structure #3 at mile marker 65.8 (over the Crystal River)

Weather permitting, the next phase of work will be rock scaling scheduled to begin the week of March 23.  The rock scaling will be taking place at the following locations:

  • Site #1 mile marker 52.6 (between the north and south entrances to Redstone)

  • Site # 2 mile marker 55.6 (near Penny Hot Springs)

  • Site #3 mile marker 58.3 (about a mile north of Avalanche Creek)

  • Site #4 mile marker 60.1 (about two miles south of the BRB campground)

The project scope encompasses from mile marker 50, south of Redstone and continues north 16.30 miles to approximately mile marker 66.30, south of the town of Carbondale. A pilot car service will be implemented at times during this project to minimize traffic delays. Near the end of May the resurfacing part of the project is scheduled to begin.  The resurfacing will include rotomilling and a heating ander re-mixing treatment followed by chip sealing.

This $4.07 million dollar project was awarded to Oldcastle SW Group of Grand Junction, Colorado and is scheduled to be complete by mid-September 2015.

TRAVEL IMPACTS  - Lane closures will occur for the duration of the project and speeds will be reduced to 35 mph through the work zone. Depending on how much material is scaled, delays could be about 20 minutes. Vehicles wider than 12 feet will be restricted through the project.

A community open house for this project is planned for mid-April.  To be added to the project update list or request an invitation to the open house, please email [email protected] or call the project hotline at 970.704.5269.
