Weekend Outlook Bright for I-70 Mountain Corridor
STATEWIDE — Though milder weather is causing recent snowfall to melt, for Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews on the I-70 mountain corridor (Golden to Dotsero), it’s business as usual. That means the incident management team is again ready to respond and plow crews will stay on patrol, as needed, as snow flurries continue into the evening.
“Some snow overnight caused the activation of the chain law at several areas on the corridor but all were lifted by this morning,” CDOT I-70 Corridor Manager Patrick Chavez said. “Snow fall melted quickly and roads were wet throughout the day despite isolated snow flurries. Westbound traffic volumes increased this afternoon as weekend ski traffic began heading to the mountains.”
Snow flurries are expected to clear overnight and weather for the weekend is predicted to be sunny and warm. CDOT is preparing for heavier traffic volumes for ski travelers, although the St. Patrick’s Day festivities along the Front Range could mitigate this somewhat.
LANE CLOSURES/TRAFFIC HOLDS: One lane will be closed through the weekend in the Veterans Memorial Tunnel; thus, a single lane in each direction will remain open. Following its avalanche safety protocol, CDOT will implement the traffic holds on eastbound US 6 on Loveland Pass at MM 222 both Saturday and Sunday between 4 and 4:45 p.m.
TRAVELER INFORMATION: I-70 motorists can receive real time traffic information from a live audio stream on Saturday and Sunday mornings and afternoons during the peak traffic times, available through www.CoTrip.org and the CDOT Mobile app.
