US 550 Red Mtn. Pass FULLY CLOSED Today Between Silverton and Ouray for Vehicle Extraction

February 19, 2015 - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - Closure to begin at 9 a.m., motorists need to travel early or take alternate route.

OURAY COUNTY – Today, the Ouray County Sheriff’s Office will be extracting a vehicle from the canyon floor more than 400 below US 550 on Red Mountain Pass, requiring a full closure of the pass. The closure will begin at 9 a.m.

The vehicle is near mile marker 89, about two miles south of Ouray. The Sheriff’s Office attempted to extract the vehicle using a crane yesterday, which proved unsuccessful. The pass was closed yesterday between 10:30 and 4 p.m. during the work. A large wrecker with cables will be brought in to complete the job. The work is likely to involve repositioning of the wrecker, therefore a lengthy closure is anticipated. When a reopen time is announced by Ouray County Sheriff, CDOT will post this to its traveler information site at www.cotrip.org.

IMPORTANT TRAVEL PLANNING NOTICE:  The pass closure gates are located just north of Silverton and just south of Ouray. If travelers are unable to reach either gate prior to 9 a.m., they will need to take an alternate route (using SH 62, SH 145 and US 160).
