Westbound US 6 to close overnight at Federal Boulevard for paving and striping

December 15, 2014 - Denver Metro/CDOT Region 1 - Snow prevented crews from finishing critical work following bridge demolition.

DENVER – Crews on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) US 6 Bridges Design Build Project will close westbound US 6 at Federal Boulevard on Monday, Dec. 15, between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. for paving and striping operations on the highway.

“We were able to demolish the bridge this weekend as planned,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “With the cold temperatures and snow on Sunday however, our crews were unable to complete the final paving and striping operations under the bridge as needed to put the finishing touches on the weekend.”

During this work, westbound US 6 will close at Federal Boulevard, while eastbound US 6 will remain completely open. Also, the southbound I-25 off-ramp to westbound US 6 will close to prevent backups on westbound US 6.

Signage will be posted in the area with further details.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:

  • Westbound US 6 traffic coming from northbound I-25 or out of downtown Denver will detour at the westbound US 6 off and on-ramps at Federal Boulevard. NOTE: Once US 6 reopens in the morning, westbound traffic coming out of downtown Denver will once again be unable to exit at Federal Boulevard for safety purposes.
  • Motorists wanting to take the southbound I-25 off-ramp to westbound US 6 should take Alameda Avenue or 8th Avenue west to access Federal Boulevard, then use Federal Boulevard to merge onto westbound US 6.

PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for August 2015.
