I-70 Mountain Construction Accommodates Thanksgiving Travel
Clear Creek County –With tens of thousands of travelers, both local and visitors alike, flocking to the mountains for holiday celebrations and ski trips, the Eastbound I-70 Peak Period Shoulder Lane (PPSL) project team has announced that it will pause lane closures on eastbound I-70 (between Empire Junction and Idaho Springs) starting Wednesday, Nov. 26 to accommodate vehicular travel through the corridor. Regular construction hours will resume on Monday, Dec. 1 and will be reassessed and adjusted for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.
“CDOT recognizes the importance of I-70 to all the residents and businesses throughout the corridor,” said Region 1 Transportation Director Tony DeVito. “We want to support them and help foster a prosperous holiday season.”
When completed in the fall of 2015, the PPSL will provide increased mobility by implementing eastbound operational improvements between Empire Junction and Idaho Springs to relieve traffic congestion during periods when traffic volumes are highest. This $72 million dollar investment is expected to save motorists an average of 30 minutes in travel time. The project is part of CDOT’s comprehensive plan to improve travel in the I-70 Mountain Corridor.
Many towns along the I-70 mountain corridor look forward to welcoming travelers over the upcoming holiday weekend and throughout the “busy season.”
“Idaho Springs is a proud partner with CDOT in improving the I-70 experience,” said Idaho Springs Mayor Michael Hillman. “We encourage travelers to join our community in kicking off the holiday season by supporting our town as we participate in Small Business Saturday and by attending our annual Tree Lighting celebration at 5:30 p.m. Saturday evening.”
