Halftime on US 6 Project brings 10 Busy Days at Federal Boulevard
DENVER – Crews on the Colorado Department of Transportation’s (CDOT) US 6 Bridges Design Build Project will shift Federal Boulevard traffic to the east onto newly built bridges over US 6 during the weekend of Nov. 7 in anticipation of demolishing the west half of the bridge the following weekend. Work to shift traffic will begin at about 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7, with traffic in its new alignment by 5 a.m. Monday, Nov. 10.
During this weekend, Federal Boulevard will be reduced to one lane of travel in each direction and there will be various closures of the Federal on-ramps and off-ramps.
“This substantial 10 day period will serve as the ‘halftime show’ for this project,” said Kevin Sullivan, CDOT Project Director. “We’re right on schedule to finish in the fall of 2015 and excited about this progress.”
Work to be done during the weekend of Nov. 7-10 includes:
- Removing asphalt and paving on Federal Boulevard, US 6 and the Federal on and off-ramps
- Placing embankment along the Federal on and off-ramps
- Resetting temporary barrier
- Reconfiguring the Federal and 5th Avenue intersection and the westbound on and off-ramp intersection
- Installing a new waterline on the Federal bridge over US 6
By 5 a.m. Monday morning, there will once again be two lanes of traffic in each direction on Federal Boulevard, and traffic will be in this configuration for approximately six months.
Other impacts associated with this traffic shift includes:
- The westbound US 6 off-ramp to Federal will be closed all weekend and throughout the following week for reconstruction. When this off-ramp reopens the evening of Friday, Nov. 14, it will be in its final alignment.
- On Friday, Nov. 7, the westbound US 6 off-ramp to Lowell/Perry will re-open to accommodate local neighborhood traffic. This is one month earlier than anticipated. The ramp will remain open for the remainder of the project.
- The Federal on-ramp to westbound US 6 and the eastbound US 6 off-ramp to Federal will close Saturday night through Monday morning.
This work precedes a 31-hour closure of US 6 at Federal Boulevard for bridge demolition work. This work is currently scheduled for 10 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 15, through 5 a.m., Monday, Nov. 17.
TRAVEL IMPACTS:
- Federal roadway: One lane of travel will be open in each direction on Federal all weekend. No detour routes will be posted, but alternate routes are advised around the area.
- During westbound US 6 off-ramp closure: Motorists will continue to Sheridan Boulevard, go north on Sheridan to Colfax Avenue, then go east on Colfax to access Federal. Local residents can access the surrounding neighborhoods by using the westbound US 6 off-ramp to Lowell/Perry.
- During Federal on-ramp to westbound US 6 closure: Motorists should take Alameda Avenue or Colfax Avenue west to Sheridan, then use Sheridan to access westbound US 6.
- During the eastbound US 6 off-ramp closure: Motorists should exit eastbound US 6 at Sheridan, take Sheridan south to Alameda, and then take Alameda east to access Federal.
PROJECT INFORMATION: The $98 million US 6 Bridges Design-Build Project will replace six obsolete bridges on US 6 between Knox Court and I-25, improve traffic movements in the I-25 and US 6 interchange and enhance driver safety by eliminating several traffic weave movements along US 6 between Federal Boulevard and I-25. Substantial project completion is planned for August 2015.
