Four three-hour closures expected Wednesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 5 on US 36 between Lyons and Estes Park for major embankment work

May 29, 2014 - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Detour routes in place; major delays expected

BOULDER, LARIMER COUNTIES — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Federal Highway Administration – Central Federal Lands Highway Division (CFLHD) have scheduled four (4) three-hour closures to take place on Wednesday, June 4, and Thursday, June 5, at mile marker 11.1 (west of Pinewood Springs near Estes Park).  Closures on both days will occur in the west zone near Estes Park from 9 a.m. to noon, and again from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The road closures will allow crews to make significant strides on embankment work to raise the road grade by as much as eight feet in some places, while ensuring the safety of motorists. The four, three-hour closures are part of the US 36 Emergency Flood Reconstruction project between Lyons and Estes Park and are in addition to the scheduled construction for next week.  The following delays should be expected for the coming week on US 36 between Lyons and Estes Park (weather permitting):

Saturday, May 31 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.:  Stops of 30 minutes

Sunday, June 1 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.:  Stops of 30 minutes

Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6 from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.: Stops of 15 minutes

Monday, June 2, Tuesday, June 3 and Friday, June 6 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Stops of one hour

Wednesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 5 from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.: Stops of one hour

Wednesday, June 4 and Thursday, June 5 from 9 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.: Three-hour closure at Mile Marker 11.1 west of Pinewood Springs near Estes Park

Monday, June 2 through Friday, June 6 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.: Stops of 30 minutes

Motorists will need to use alternate routes, especially via State Highway 7 between Lyons and Estes Park, as no through traffic will be allowed during the closures and major delays are expected!

Altogether, there will be 20 different three-hour full closures (the embankment work on June 4 and 5 will be the eighth, ninth, tenth and eleventh of 20), 10 different two hour full closures (one of ten has occurred so far), and 10 different night time full closures (all night time full closures have taken place). Due to this and other projects on US 36, including utility work, major delays are expected on US 36 during the hours of 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. daily. CDOT is strongly recommending the use of US 34 between Loveland and Estes Park, and SH 7 between Estes Park and Lyons as alternate routes for those who can use them. Throughout the duration of construction, cyclists will not be permitted on US 36 within the work zones, and several trail access points will be closed for safety reasons. Other flood-impacted highways will remain open for cyclists, who ride at their own risk and are urged to ride using extra caution.

American Civil Constructors, Inc. is the contractor for this project.
