CDOT Rehabilitating/Preserving Seven Bridges in South-Central Colorado

SOUTH-CENTRAL COLORADO – The Colorado Department of Transportation has begun a project to improve the condition of seven bridges in south-central Colorado. The work, contracted to GA Western Construction Company for $1.18 million, will rehabilitate and preserve bridge decks on State Highways 17, 149 and 368 and  US Highway 160 in Conejos, Alamosa, Huerfano, Mineral and Rio Grande counties (please see area maps, below).

Specifically, the work will include:  a full-depth removal and replacement of existing pavement on the bridges; removal of some of the deck’s concrete and patching in areas where necessary; installation of waterproofing membrane on five bridges; removal and replacement of bridge expansion devices on two of the bridges; and re-striping on all seven bridges.

TRAVEL IMPACTS:  The project may last through November, but is expected to have an earlier completion. Work will begin on the three structures on SH 149 and the one on US 160. Then, the three remaining bridges to the south will be addressed. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., motorists will encounter single-lane, alternating traffic in the work zone, only two structures will be impacted at any one time during the project, to limit impacts to travelers. The speed limit will be reduced to 40 mph in the work zones, and an adjacent detour will be in place at the SH 368 bridge over the Empire Irrigation Canal.

*This bridge project will receive funding from RAMP, Responsible Acceleration of Maintenance and Partnerships. RAMP is better coordinating project expenditures and available funding. Under the RAMP program, CDOT will fund multi-year projects based on year of expenditure, rather than saving for the full amount of a project before construction begins.
