Rockfall Update - US 550 Red Mountain Pass

February 3, 2014 - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - Fence installation going well, traffic could flow through 24/7 starting this weekend if weather complies.

OURAY COUNTY – Despite the inclement weather, crews working on the rockfall fencing on US 550 over Red Mountain Pass are making good progress. With continued good progress and weather permitting, the fence could be complete by Friday. This temporary fencing—360 feet long and 24 feet high—is being installed to further safeguard travel on the highway until a more permanent solution is in place.

CDOT and contractor Yenter Companies will continue work on the fence as weather permits and forecasters with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center will continue to monitor the area for avalanche risk in the work zone.

When fence installation is complete, CDOT expects to open the roadway up to traffic 24/7, and single-lane, alternating travel will continue in this area for the time-being.
