Public Invited to Fillmore Interchange Project Meeting

COLORADO SPRINGS – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is hosting an open house next week to present proposed improvements to the Interstate 25/Fillmore Street Interchange.

It will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 5, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Pikes Peak Workforce Center, 1675 Garden of the Gods Road – Suite 1107.  The open house will have displays for viewing and project team members will be on hand to answer questions.

Work on the project is expected to begin this summer.

The purpose of the project is to improve safety and traffic flow to meet existing and future travel demands.  It will incorporate a unique design called a Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI), which weaves traffic onto the opposite side of the road as Fillmore travels across I-25.  It will be the first one along the Front Range and the second one in Colorado. The state’s first DDI is scheduled to open to traffic in Grand Junction in Marc.  Another DDI will be built in Superior near Boulder.

DDIs have been constructed in only a few states since 2009.  Traffic engineers say DDIs are safer and more efficient than conventional interchanges in heavy traffic areas.
