CDOT opens Third I-25 Lane Southbound; Third Northbound Lane by Tomorrow
The third lane of southbound I-25 opened to traffic this morning from Interquest Parkway to Woodmen Road. And, unless adverse weather or the current work is delayed (paving and guardrail installation), the third lane of northbound I-25 will open by tomorrow morning from Woodmen Road to North Academy Boulevard.
“This is the first step toward providing greater mobility and enhanced safety to drivers on I-25 between Colorado Springs and north El Paso County,” said Dan Hunt, project manager for the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT). “While this first segment of expanded highway will provide additional capacity through these areas, we’re asking drivers to remain vigilant and drive safely and at the posted speed limit throughout the remainder of the project as work continues to expand the interstate to Monument.”
Work over the holiday weekend is scheduled as follows, subject to road and weather conditions:
- No work overnight tonight
- Daytime work Friday, Saturday and Sunday (no traffic impacts – behind barrier)
- Nighttime lane closures Sunday beginning at 10 p.m.
“We also want to remind drivers that the asphalt they’ll be driving on when the new lanes open is not the final pavement. The final pavement will be applied in the spring and summer of 2014 when temperatures are more conducive to that work,” Hunt said.
As the project progresses, the new third lanes will occasionally need to be closed for additional finishing work or to provide safe access for construction crews and equipment.
