CDOT's Don Hunt Discusses State's Transportation Funding Shortfall

July 10, 2013 - Statewide Transportation Plan - WASHINGTON D.C. - In a new Two-Minute State DOT Update video, Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Executive Director Don Hunt outlines some of the ways his agency is doing more with less funding.

Hunt tells Transportation TV, CDOT has been dismantling and systematically rebuilding existing operating practices to improve customer service and overall efficiency.

"Our primary focus has been use practices and procedures that can help CDOT become a more dynamic organization," said Hunt. However, he also says that without greater investment in Colorado's transportation systems, state residents will see negative effects on their daily lives, the economy, and tourism.

"A private effort led by the Governor pulled together 1,000 Coloradoans to talk about our investment problems for the future" said Hunt. "This has started a state-wide conversation about finding an additional source of funding for transportation."

In the video, Hunt also looks ahead to this fall when CDOT will host delegates to the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials' Annual Meeting to be held in Denver, October 17 - 21. Hunt describes the national conference as another opportunity to highlight many of the transportation initiatives underway in the state, including the multi-modal development at Denver's Union Station and US 36 Express Lanes Project. This project, which is CDOT's first public-private partnership, was recently profiled in the New York Times.
