Eagle Interchange Project Moving Forward
EAGLE COUNTY — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Town of Eagle are in the process of finalizing plans for construction of the new Eagle Interchange, with construction expected to begin in mid-July 2013 for the first phase of the project. Utility relocations are already underway within the project boundaries.
The project is critical to the Eagle community because in the past several years, a large increase in population in the area has created traffic flow issues, especially during rush hours, at the existing Eagle interchange with I-70. Frequent problems with traffic backups through town, on the I-70 off-ramp, and even on I-70 not only threaten motorists' safety, but also create congestion. Traffic light adjustments to help alleviate congestion have been unsuccessful as a permanent solution. Furthermore, pedestrian safety is also an issue as there is no pedestrian access over I-70.
To help improve interchange safety and mobility, and to help prevent congestion, CDOT has partnered with the Town of Eagle on the interchange reconstruction, which will take place along the Eby Creek corridor starting at Market Street and ending at the intersection with US 6. The project will include portions of the various side roads accessing the corridor. New roundabouts will be constructed at intersections with Eby Creek Road including: Westbound I-70 ramps, eastbound I-70 ramps, and Chambers Avenue. A pedestrian bridge over I-70 will be added.
For the first phase of construction, crews will work on the roundabouts at the I-70 eastbound and westbound ramps as well as starting the pedestrian bridge over I-70.
CDOT is aware that the project is critically important to the Eagle community, and contractors will be working with businesses and commuters to help minimize construction impacts.
