US 36 Closed for Eight Nights for Girder Installation on Uptown Avenue Bridge

May 8, 2013 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - BROOMFIELD – On May 8-15, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will install bridge girders and deck panels for the new Uptown Avenue (Olde Wadsworth) bridge, which is between 104th Avenue and Wadsworth Parkway.

The Uptown Avenue bridge is one of several that will be replaced or widened to accommodate the additional lanes on US 36 as part of the US 36 Express Lanes Project.

The girder installation will require a full closure of eastbound and westbound US 36 between Wadsworth Parkway and Church Ranch Boulevard for a total of eight nights. The closure will take place from 10 p.m. to 5:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday and from 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

“We are installing 22 girders, weighing approximately 98,000 pounds each across the highway, so the closure is necessary for safety of the traveling public,” said CDOT Project Director John Schwab. “While a detour route will be in place, we encourage motorists to use alternate routes, if possible, as there will likely be delays.”

This spring and summer, commuters can expect to see major construction as five bridges are demolished and replaced and three more are widened to accommodate additional lanes on the highway. Girder installation was recently completed on Wadsworth Parkway – Wadsworth Parkway and the Uptown Avenue bridges will be complete by November 2013. The Sheridan bridge, BNSF bridge, and the US 36 bridges over Lowell Boulevard, the Westminster Promenade, and East and West Flatiron Crossing will also be under construction this spring and summer.

The $312 million multi-modal project will build an express lane in each direction on US 36 from Federal Boulevard to 88th Street in Louisville/Superior. The lanes will accommodate High Occupancy Vehicles (HOV), Bus Rapid Transit and tolled Single Occupancy Vehicles. In addition, the project will replace several bridges, build a commuter bikeway, add Bus Rapid Transit improvements, and install Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for tolling, transit, and traveler information, and incident management.

Ames/Granite Joint Venture team is the design-build contractor for the project. Construction began last summer, and the project will be open to the public in January 2015.
