I-76 Resurfacing project between Sedgwick and Nebraska begins today
“This is the fourth resurfacing project in this area,” said Project Engineer Jeff Vickers. “In the past few years we have resurfaced westbound I-76 from MM 169 to MM 184, and eastbound I-76 from MM 173 to MM 184. This work will not only extend the life of the interstate, but will create a smoother drive for motorists.”
For the resurfacing, new erosion control, guardrails, and striping improvements will be made to I-76. Additionally, accommodations will be made to allow for wider turns for truckers both at the Julesburg rest area roundabout as well as the off- and on-ramps to and from I-76 leading into the town of Julesburg.
In partnership with the Town of Julesburg, CDOT will also be making improvements to 1st Street through downtown Julesburg from Plum Street to Ash Street. Along 1st Street, crews will construct new sidewalks in accordance with American Disabilities Act (ADA) specifications, and will make drainage improvements to the roadway. Access to local homes and businesses will remain open throughout the process, which is expected to start on the west side of the project and move eastward one to two blocks at a time.
“1st Street is oftentimes one of the first parts of our town that residents and visitors see,” said Julesburg Town Manager Allen Coyne. “This work will help increase accessibility for those who need ADA accommodations in addition to helping improve overall look and feel of downtown Julesburg.”
Throughout both projects, motorists, bicyclists, and pedestrians can expect to see crews working Mondays through Fridays from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Delays during working hours will be kept to a minimum, but there will be various lane closures on eastbound I-76, where the speed limit will be reduced to between 45 MPH and 65 MPH depending on the work underway at the time. Additionally, occasional lane closures will be required for the work in Julesburg, but access to the rest area and businesses will remain open. Motorists are encouraged to drive Slow for the Cone Zone!
This project has a contracted cost of $13.9 million to Interstate Highway Construction, including $300,000 contributed in partnership by the Town of Julesburg.
