State Highway 14 Coal Bank Creek Bridge Near Ault to Be Replaced
WELD COUNTY — Beginning Wednesday, February 13, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin a bridge replacement project on State Highway (SH) 14 over the Coal Bank Creek, located three miles west of Ault and east of the I-25 intersection at mile marker 149. The project is expected to last through September 2013.
Originally built in 1935, the existing bridge is structurally deficient and warrants replacement as a part of the Colorado Bridge Enterprise (CBE), which is part of the Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery (FASTER) legislation. The bridge will be replaced with a wider and higher structure that meets current standards. The first few months of construction will involve widening of the roadway, installation of new storm drainage piping, and utility relocations. In mid-summer, crews will begin work to remove and replace the bridge itself. Many Colorado bridges are in poor condition, and by replacing the Coal Bank Creek bridge, CDOT will create a safer trip for drivers.
Normal work hours will be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with limited weekend work. While construction is underway, motorists should anticipate a one lane road with flaggers during work hours and delays of approximately five minutes. A full closure of SH 14 for up to 28 days will be required during the summer in order to remove and replace the bridge and rebuild the roadway. A detour will be provided and details about the full closure will be forthcoming.
The speed limit will be reduced throughout the construction zone and restrictions will be in place for oversized/overweight vehicles during work hours. CDOT urges motorists to please driveSlow for the Cone Zone.
SEMA Construction Inc. of Centennial, CO. is the contractor for this $3.7 million project.
