Construction of New Roundabout in Telluride is Suspended for Winter Break

November 19, 2012 - PROJECT UPDATE - Southwestern Colorado/CDOT Region 5 - TELLURIDE – The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and contractor Williams Construction are reconstructing the intersection at SH 145 at Society Turn, approximately three miles west of Telluride.

A roundabout will be constructed to improve safety at this “T” intersection. Other project elements include a new rock retaining wall along the concrete trail, new asphalt resurfacing, lighting, landscaping and drainage work.

Project Progress
As of November 1st, the project is about 10 percent complete.  During the fall of 2012 the contractor focused on work that will allow traffic to continue to flow around the construction zone while the intersection is removed and the roundabout is constructed. Crews completed underground utility work and the majority of a temporary roundabout that will function as a detour next season.

Project Schedule
The project got underway in July 2012, will be suspended for the winter until April 2013 (weather dependent,) and is on schedule for completion by October 2013. Next spring, crews will focus on paving and painting the temporary roundabout. It will take 4-6 weeks for the temporary roundabout to open for public use. The next phase includes the demolition of the existing intersection, then construction of the permanent roundabout. Storm-water management, erosion control and seeding are ongoing activities throughout the project.

Project Cost
The total cost of the project is approximately $3.56 million, with $900,000 coming from Telluride, $1.03 million for safety improvements from Colorado FASTER,* and the remainder from state and federal sources.
