Don't Let Your Halloween Turn Into a Nightmare - Be Sure to Designate a Sober Driver!

October 25, 2012 - Traffic Safety - Halloween DUI enforcement begins tomorrow.

STATEWIDE — The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) and the Colorado State Patrol (CSP) will conduct their Halloween “Heat Is On” DUI enforcement beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, October 26. The enforcement will last until 3 a.m. on Thursday, November 1.

“Last year, the CSP and 95 law enforcement agencies across the state made 447 DUI arrests during the Halloween Heat Is On crackdown,” said Colonel James Wolfinbarger, Chief of the CSP. “For hundreds of drivers who choose to get behind the wheel after drinking, Halloween can become a nightmare. A DUI arrest can cost motorists more than $10,000 in fines, attorney fees, increased insurance premiums, as well as their driving privileges. If celebrating with alcohol, always make the smart driving choice and designate a sober driver.”

“Historically, October is one of the deadliest months for alcohol-related traffic crashes,” said CDOT Chief Engineer Tim Harris. “Last year, 10 people were killed alcohol related crashes in October, 17 in 2010 and 26 in 2009. We urge motorists to make plans ahead of time for traveling safely to and from Halloween festivities.”

During the 2012 Halloween enforcement period, motorists are advised that there will be increased DUI checkpoints, saturation and regular patrols underway.

More than 100 law enforcement agencies will be participating this year, including:

  • Adams County Sheriff’s Office
  • Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office
  • Arvada Police Department
  • Aurora Police Department
  • Boulder County Sheriff’s Office

  • Denver Police Department
