Full Closure of Eastbound I-270 This Weekend for Paving and Other Roadway Repairs

September 17, 2012 - TRAFFIC ADVISORY - Denver Metro Colorado/CDOT Region 6 - DENVER – Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, September 21 and continuing until 5 a.m. on Monday, September 24, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin work on a resurfacing and safety improvement project on I-270 by closing all lanes of eastbound I-270 between I-76 and I-70.

The closure of will allow crews to pave, repair shoulders and make some grade improvements over a short time period before the winter weather arrives. Motorists heading eastbound from either I-76 or US 36 will be detoured south on I-25 to eastbound I-70. A similar weekend closure of westbound I-270 between I-70 and I-76 is tentatively scheduled for the weekend of October 5, weather permitting.

“Last year, we repaired multiple bridge decks along eastbound and westbound I-270 to improve the roadway surface,” said CDOT Resident Engineer Neil Lacey.  “The current project expands upon the recent improvements, by paving about one mile of I-270, repairing shoulders and eliminating the roller coaster effect that motorists experience when traveling I-270.  The reason for the weekend closures is to make the initial improvements to the roadway, which will help reduce potholes often formed during the spring and winter.  We will then complete the remainder of the project next spring. ”

In all, the project consists of the following improvements to both eastbound and westbound I-270:

  • Rotomill and pave three miles of I-270 between just south of Dahlia (56th Avenue) and I-76.
  • Correct the profile of the roadway between the South Platte River and State Highway 265 to eliminate small hills and the “roller coaster” effect for motorists.
  • Rotomill and pave several bridge decks on I-270 and minor repairs to the bridge over Vasquez Boulevard.
  • Repair the badly potholed shoulders and resurface the shoulders south of Dahlia Street.
  • Remove and replace damaged guardrail along I-270 and the ramps.
  • Install ramp meters at the ramp from westbound Vasquez Boulevard to westbound I-270 to help regulate the flow of traffic during peak hours.

In preparation for this weekend’s closure, crews will be out Wednesday, September 12th, and Thursday, September 13th, with a single lane closure on eastbound I-270 between Vasquez Boulevard and I-76 for guardrail repair and survey work from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. both nights.

After the two weekend closures, there will be various single lane closures on eastbound and westbound I-270 between I-76 and Dahlia Street from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., Sunday through Thursday for additional guardrail repair before shutting down the project for the winter.  More information will be released once the weekend work, tentatively scheduled for the weekend of October 5th, is confirmed.
