CDOT to Begin Intersection Reconstruction at State Highway 119 and Jay and Niwot Roads Monday

September 21, 2012 - NEW CONSTRUCTION PROJECT - Northeastern Colorado/CDOT Region 4 - Work expected to last into May 2013.

BOULDER COUNTY — On Monday, September 24, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) will begin work on an intersection reconstruction project at State Highway (SH) 119 and Niwot Road in Niwot. Work on this phase of the project is scheduled for completion in late March 2013. In early October 2012 construction is expected to begin at SH 119 and Jay Road in Boulder with estimated completion in May 2013.

As part of the project, crews will reconfigure the intersections of SH 119 and Jay/Niwot roads, including widening SH 119 to accommodate turn lanes in both the northbound and southbound directions of the highway, widening Jay Road and Niwot Road to accommodate turn lanes in both the eastbound and westbound directions of each, adding medians, improving traffic signals, adding and improving sidewalks, and making drainage/irrigation improvements. The work will help improve the efficiency of moving traffic through the intersection, as well as improve the safety of the intersection.

Work on the project will take place between the hours of 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday each week. There will be some detours and lane shifts required throughout the project, which will be determined at a later date, as well as some occasional night work. The speed limit will be reduced to 40 MPH through the work zone. CDOT would like to remind motorists to obey all road signs and flaggers, and to drive Slow for the Cone Zone.

The $4.5 million project, contracted to Jalisco International, Inc., is funded as part of the FASTER (Funding Advancement for Surface Transportation and Economic Recovery) legislation which is dedicated to improving safety and replacing poor bridges throughout the state.
