US 160 Resurfacing and Bridge Rehabilitation, Mancos east
Starting this Tuesday, August 21, work on the bridge over the Mancos River begins, on the east side of town. During the bridge rehabilitation, one lane across the bridge will be permanently closed 24/7 to enable crews to complete asphalt, curb, and rail work. Resulting travel impacts are detailed, below.
The project, which began in mid-July, involves shoulder widening in critical areas, roadway resurfacing and improving super-elevation correction where needed (super-elevation is the tilting of a roadway that helps keep vehicles on the road while cornering.)
Highway resurfacing will involve a “mill and fill” operation, in which crews mill off the top two inches of asphalt to remove the damaged/cracked surface; resurface the milled pavement with two inches of new asphalt; then overlay the entire stretch with another two inches of new asphalt to add strength and durability to the highway surface and extend its life by about 11 years.
A & S Construction of Canon City was contracted $5.62 million project, which is scheduled for completion on November 23, 2012.
NEW: LANE CLOSURE & EASTBOUND DETOUR: During bridge rehabilitation (surface, curb and bridge rail improvements) from August through October 9, a single lane across the bridge will be closed 24/7. In order to minimize the impacts to schools and local businesses during this full-time lane closure, a detour for eastbound traffic onto US 160 Business Route (Grand Avenue) will only be in effect during nighttime hours and on weekends while there is no work underway. Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., westbound single-lane, alternating traffic will be controlled by flaggers on US 160 across the bridge. Eastbound traffic will use the detour, Monday through Friday, from 5 p.m. to 7 a.m.
REGULAR US 160 TRAVEL IMPACTS: The project extends from milepost 56 to milepost 63. Typical work hours are Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be lane closures with single-lane, alternating traffic and delays (which will vary depending on traffic volumes for both directions during the construction of this project. There will be no weekend work.
